Five years on: games that got me through lockdown

Time flies when you're having fun...

Five years have passed since the first lockdown turned the world upside down. Streets emptied, offices closed, and the familiar rhythm of everyday life was replaced by an unsettling stillness. But as one world paused, another burst into life: the world of gaming. For me, games became more than just a pastime; they were a lifeline – a way to unwind and maintain sanity. It was fortunate that, a year prior, I had invested in an Xbox One. I also retrieved our old Nintendo 64 from when my brother and I were children. This meant I had a diverse range of gaming options, from modern titles to old-school classics.

Looking back, it's almost strange how much I relied on these digital worlds to get through such a difficult time. It wasn't just about killing time; it was about finding connection, purpose, and even a sense of control when the real world felt completely chaotic. And three games, in particular, became essential tools in that process

Endless distractions and a sense of accomplishment...

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, with its variety of activities and side missions, gave me endless distractions and a sense of accomplishment. Growing up, I'd watch my brother play the game, not really understanding much, but when I finally got old enough to play it myself, it became one of my favourite games. During lockdown, playing San Andreas helped me feel a bit closer to him, even though we couldn't see each other in person. Plus, I got to "experience" new places without even leaving my living room - exploring the virtual streets of Los Santos (Los Angeles), San Fierro (San Francisco), and Las Venturas (Las Vegas) as CJ, the game's main character

Helped me reconnect with my childhood...

Then there was Super Mario 64, which helped me reconnect with my childhood. Playing as Mario, the iconic Italian plumber in his blue overalls, jumping on angry mushrooms and racing against Koopa the Turtle Chasing stars, battling Bowser, and saving Princess Peach (even though she probably could have handled Bowser herself, being the female icon she is!), brought back a flood of happy memories and a sense of pure, unadulterated joy.

Providing a much-needed escape from reality...

And finally, Red Dead Redemption 1 & 2 offered a stunning visual experience and a captivating atmosphere. Unlike San Andreas and Mario, this was a completely new game for me, and I quickly connected with the selfless Arthur Morgan and his world. Getting lost in that world transported me to another place and time, providing a much-needed escape from reality. While both GTA and Red Dead Redemption offered mission-based gameplay, I found myself connecting with two vastly different storylines and characters, each providing a unique form of escape and engagement. These three games became more than just games; they were anchors.
