The game will be a direct sequel to Amnesia: The Dark Descent, which released ten years ago. While the original story followed the footsteps of Daniel around a castle as his past haunted him, the sequel will have a new setting in which Tasi is trapped in the Algerian desert.

As Tasi tries to recover her memories, a creature follows her, exploiting the insecurities and psychological fears of both the audience and the characters which will hopefully create a more engaging experience.
The official trailer followed several secret videos and clues given through an Alternative Reality Game (ARG). Players followed the little pieces of evidence left for them by developers until they reached a website.

Co-founder of Frictional Games, Thomas Grip, told IGN: “I personally always thought that Amnesia: The Dark Descent lacked a good narrative. Now, with SOMA under our belt, and a ton of experience in just that, it felt like the right time to tackle it. To have this really scary game, with all that you expect from an Amnesia sequel, but to also add an emotional journey on top.”
