Since I was a baby, I have loved olives. This is surprising because I was the pickiest eater ever as a child (thank god I grew out of that), and olives are certainly an acquired taste. However, there’s even photo evidence of me sat with my dad, both of us eating olives like there’s no tomorrow. So, with all that in mind, I’m excited for the olives in Greece! Speaking of my dad, he’s an expert at cooking meats, so that they are juicy, soft, and tasty. This means that the meats I try in Greece have a high standard to meet. Regardless, eating a gyros on the beach sounds amazing, especially if it lives up the level of my dad’s cooking.
Another thing I love is cheese. Halloumi, feta, wensleydale, mozzarella, parmesan, good old cheddar; cheese reigns supreme. My mouth waters at the thought of honey-baked feta or halloumi gyros – if I don’t come back looking like cheese, I’ve done something wrong. When cooking for myself at Uni, the ingredients that I buy week on week are sweet potatoes and chickpeas. Therefore, it won’t shock anyone that I’m excited for the hummus and pita breads. My friend told me that the pita breads in Greece are super soft and fluffy – perfect for dipping.
All the foods above are ones that I’ve eaten many times before, but my food-excitement doesn’t stop there. Foods such as baklava, moussaka, pastitsio, taramasalata, tzatziki, and more are all on my list to try! We’re also already planning our supermarket trips to get picky bits and fun snacks. It’s safe to say my suitcase will be heavier on the way home once I’m armed with all my goodies!
All in all, I think it’s obvious that I’m very excited to go on holiday and try all the foods – hopefully I haven’t gassed Greece up too much in my head…
