It’s the start of a new semester, and you’re looking for a taste of summer. After living in Spain for 6 months this year and 4 months in France last year, I’ve really missed the cuisine (and the sun, but we are in Newcastle…). Here are some of my favourite spots around the Toon to help you hold onto the last of the sun.
Cafe Andaluz
A personal favourite that I frequently visited in my second year of uni. They have different types of tapas and paella (some of the most iconic Spanish dishes). I went back at the start of my fourth year, and it didn’t disappoint. The first few bites of paella took me back to the summer evenings, where we would all finish class and go around the corner to the restaurant.
El Torero
This is a new find, so bear with me for not knowing everything on the menu just yet. So we got the pan y ali-oli (honestly, it’s very similar to garlic bread, but also different – very nice though) and some croquetas de jamón y pollo (ham and chicken croquettes) and I really enjoyed it. The restaurant itself didn’t feel chaotic so we really got to enjoy the food in the midst of unpacking the flat.
Deli Churros
If there’s one thing I miss the most about Spain (other than the weather), it’s getting an empanada on the way to class. Deli Churros has some of the best empanadas I’ve had since coming home. My personal favourite is the beef, but they’re all amazing.
Greggs
Okay now I know this is a rogue one, but their croissants will forever remind me of the random weekend that me and a friend went to Paris and got most of the pastries from a bakery. It’s hard to feel sad after a little French pastry (unless I’ve tried to make them again), but if you get yourself a little sweet treat after hours of studying, it’s all worth it.
