My first recommendation is to get outside. Whilst this seems difficult at the moment with the current weather, make sure to make the most of the few sunny days we have. Even getting outside for a 10-minute walk in the morning can immediately alleviate your mood. You could walk to get a coffee or even go to the beach for a walk along the seafront.

My next tip would be to make time for your friends. It is so easy to stay in bed for much longer and not leave the house given how dark and gloomy the days are but, spending time with your friends whether it’s going for coffee or having a movie night can really boost your mood. As humans, we are very social animals and have a dependence on others so plan activities with those who put you in a good mood, doing an activity that makes you happy.

My final tip would be to acknowledge that we do need more rest during winter and so prioritise taking care of yourself. Biologically, in the winter our bodies need more rest than they require in summer so, you shouldn’t feel lazy for wanting to stay in bed for longer or to have a night in during the week. One way to find the balance between rest and becoming laziness is through “active dormancy”. This is the blend of having a more restful lifestyle whilst still doing activities which keep our brain active. Some activities you can do are knitting or crocheting, colouring or painting, reading and doing puzzles.
