In the current climate, many people have started feeling pessimistic. Be it discussions surrounding overturning the Equality Act, or the multiple humanitarian crises around the globe, it is almost impossible to find a balance between feeling good about your personal future and being aware socially and politically. Still, it is essential for our own happiness and to foster social alliances and change.

The current trend of “going analogue” - which includes cutting back on social media and engaging with the physical - is one way people can stay positive without turning a blind eye to the world. Social media algorithms have allowed for the distribution of propaganda and encourage making jokes about serious topics. It can be mocked to go against this meme culture and to stand for your own beliefs, making keeping a political voice complex while maintaining peace. Additionally, doomscrolling and addictive media can mean an overconsumption of content surrounding the negative circumstances in the world. It is possible to be aware, but online this can quickly turn into a hyper-awareness which fosters pessimism and anxiety. Turning to physical media, both for enjoyment and for news sources, can reduce anxiety surrounding the world’s condition while simultaneously encouraging people to find their own political perspectives and voices.

...others hold your views even if your voice seems silenced on a larger scale.

Additionally, finding a socially aligned political community is essential. It is not to say that engaging with many people who hold different perspectives isn’t helpful to explore nuances in opinions and build empathy for those with different lifestyles, because it is. However, finding optimism without compromising a political voice can be done through community with like-minded individuals. It allows you to find hope in dark times, as others hold your views even if your voice seems silenced on a larger scale. Change starts with one person, but feels more real with many.  These communities are vital in allowing your own political voice to grow and feel heard, while still feeling optimistic and hopeful.

The current climate can be anxiety-inducing for anyone impacted by the large-scale changes in political spheres globally. However, looking after yourself and allowing yourself space to grow and thrive is essential. Positive change can start in your own soul, so allow it space to heal and cope with what is happening.
