The mosh pit can be the most electrifying place; squished together with a hundred sweaty bodies feeling the bass hit your stomach, there is nowhere like it to truly experience the power of music. It can, however, be a scary one too; the heat can be intense, accessories and drinks go flying, and you’ll inevitably look up at some point to see someone soaring over your head towards the stage. Want to mosh and still make it out in one piece? Here’s a handy guide for when you’re starting out.

1. Drink PLENTY of water

Trust me on this, you’re going to want to be as hydrated as possible when you’re in the thick of it. Prior to my first mosh pit, I never believed people when they said how sweaty it could be in there but believe you me it is. The pit is much more fun when you don’t feel that you’re going to pass out.

2. Don’t wear too many layers

Carrying on my last point, too many layers is a no go in the pit. I made the mistake of wearing a thick leather motorbike jacket to my first mosh and I felt like I was going to pass out. You also don’t want to be carrying loads of jackets, as you’re going to need both hands. Trust me.

3. Make sure your pockets are secure

Don’t make the same mistake as the many people whose phones, cigarette packets and lip balms I see scattered across the floor post-gig. Try and keep everything tucked away in a zip pocket or just a deep pocket – don’t forget to periodically check that its all still there.

4. Go with the flow!

When you’re in the mosh pit, it turns into a living entity; when everyone moves, you move with them. Forwards, backwards, sideways - when they go you go, so I highly recommend just going with the flow as much as possible. Fall into the rhythm of the music and the mosh pit will too.

5. Look out for others

When I embarked on my first mosh, I was absolutely terrified of falling and being trampled underfoot - I couldn’t have been farther from the truth. A mosh pit depends on everyone looking out for each other, catching people when they fall, pulling them back to their feet, checking on them if they look a little faint. That is not to say that you shouldn’t stay safe, but I truly believe if you give good vibes to the pit, it will return them to you.
