I don’t want you to depart,
I still want you in my care.
We’ve never been so far apart,
you won’t feel at home there.

I don’t want to see you go,
but it’s time for you to grow.

I know it’s your time to fly free.
Can you keep yourself safe?
So far, that's been a job for me,
Though soon that won't be the case…

I want to see you grow,
it’s time for my nerves to go.

I hope that you gain a close friend,
I hope you eat your food to the bone,
I hope you watch what you spend,
I desperately hope you'll visit home!

I need to see you grow,
it’s time for me to know.

I'll know you’ll call me for joy and pleasure,
not just when you’re worse for wear.
I know you'll gain happiness beyond measure,
just know I’ll keep you in my nightly prayer.

I need to see you blossom,
it’s time for me to watch you shine.
