In conversation with Dish, Texas ahead of NUSU sessions

Describing Dish, Texas as ‘spikey, intentional and emotional’, Dom (guitarist and songwriter) spoke about their sound, live performances and their upcoming EP ahead of their performance at NUSU sessions on October 1st.

Formed initially by lead guitarist and songwriter Dom whilst studying at Newcastle University, Dish, Texas are a four-part band based in Newcastle. Together the band's (Dom, Felix, Alex, and Joe) niche and eclectic music tastes, as well as their instrumental talent, have helped to shape the band and its sound into what it has evolved into today, and has become a project that they are all extremely proud of. 

The band credits the North East's music scene as a large source of inspiration for their sound. From the likes of Sting to The Animals, Dish, Texas has specifically pointed to Lindisfarne and Lots of Hands as key musical influences, not solely in their sound, but in their songwriting. Dom (guitarist and songwriter) specifically details Lots of Hands as having a particular influence over his songwriting for the band, as listening to their discography inspired a greater sense of freedom within the music for him. 

Their second EP ‘Down is Heavy’ is coming out soon, and has developed a more intentional and selective sound compared to their first EP ‘My Face Turned Blue’ released in 2025. In particular, they quoted Djo’s use of ‘Ear Candy’, referring to small individual parts of the song that really help a listener to become immersed, as a main feature of this EP, and highlighted the more intricate composition on this record. 

In terms of songs, the already released single ‘Boat Shoes’ is a favourite within the band, but Dom otherwise singled out being proud of ‘Old Moon’ for its songwriting. ‘Down Is Heavy’ is out October 2^nd. 

When asked about their live performances, Dom described how their music has an intimate feel whilst inspiring an energetic energy from the crowd. Their goal is for listeners to become ‘fully immersed’ in their music from the composition to the songwriting and to most importantly just ‘feel’ the music.
