In conversation with Ollie Fletcher: ‘There’s definitely a different buzz’

After the first season under Red Bull's sponsorship, Ollie Fletcher sat down with us to give his opinion.

For Ollie Fletcher, Newcastle Red Bulls (previously known as Newcastle Falcons) is more than just a club. It feels like home. After coming up through the Northumberland Developing Player Pathway (NDPP), the academy system, university rugby, and finally the first team, Fletcher has seen the club change from many perspectives. Now, with Newcastle finishing its first full season under Red Bull's sponsorship while competing in both the Premiership and EPCR Challenge Cup, Fletcher balances the thrill of change with the grounded view of someone who has been around for years.

‘From a physical point of view, probably not much is different yet,’ Fletcher explains. ‘Especially compared to last year, when there was uncertainty about where the club was headed. Now we have a clear direction; that’s the biggest shift. There’s definitely a different feeling around the place.'

While the visible changes may currently be limited to branding, Fletcher says the atmosphere feels noticeably different. He states that ‘there’s a real buzz, not only around the club but also in the North East. It’s exciting; these things take time, but there’s definitely a sense that something big is building.’

There’s a real buzz, not only around the club but also in the North East.

This long-term view makes sense given Fletcher’s journey. He started at Tynedale RFC as a child and moved through Newcastle School for Boys, Northumberland DPP, and eventually the Falcons academy (now Newcastle Red Bulls) at under-15 level.

‘I’ve kind of done it the long way through,’ he says. ‘I played from juniors all the way up. I got signed right out of school, represented clubs on loan, played for England Under-20s and England Students. All those experiences probably prepared me for making my first-team debut.’ That debut against Northampton Saints at 20 years old was a key moment, but Fletcher’s varied rugby education made him feel ready.

‘It was definitely exciting, but I’d had a lot of experiences already. I probably did uni a bit backwards because I didn’t actually play university rugby properly until my third year, but all those different environments helped prepare me.’

The university and the club were both brilliant. They helped when I needed it, but they also trusted me to manage my own time.

University life became a key part of Fletcher’s growth, both as a player and as a person. As a psychology graduate from Newcastle University, he understands the challenge of balancing elite sport with academic pressure. ‘I had a really good experience, to be fair,’ he says. ‘The university and the club were both brilliant. They helped when I needed it, but they also trusted me to manage my own time. That was probably the biggest challenge, learning to take charge of my own path.’

Fletcher credits Newcastle University’s support systems, from tutors to sports leadership, for guiding him through that double commitment. ‘They were brilliant. It was definitely challenging, but I wouldn’t change much.’

His connection to university rugby remains strong. He serves as assistant coach for Newcastle University Rugby Football Club (NURFC), a role he clearly values. ‘Coaching uni lads probably reminds me most why I play rugby,’ he says. ‘When you’re in a professional environment every day, it can be easy to see rugby differently. But with the students, it strips it all back. They play because they love it.’

That belief is powerful for Fletcher. ‘It freshens me up. It reminds me of being a kid again, going down to Tynedale or Newcastle School for Boys and just loving rugby.’

Newcastle’s student rugby scene has grown significantly in recent years. Events at Kingston Park, such as the Varsity finale, and increased competition in BUCS highlight this. Fletcher thinks the city itself plays a major role. ‘Rugby’s always been strong here. It’s a great place to develop because people come here, put in the effort, and work hard. Newcastle as a city encourages that mentality.’

He sees university rugby as a valid route into the professional game. ‘There are lads in our setup who’ve been in pro environments, boys who’ve played for clubs like Edinburgh. University rugby is becoming a breeding ground.’

Looking ahead to next season, Fletcher’s goals are clear: improve personally, secure his place, and help Newcastle rugby become a bigger part of the region’s sports scene. ‘First, you’ve got to get picked,’ he says with a grin. ‘But beyond that, it’s about how we move the club forward.’

For Fletcher, Newcastle Red Bulls’ challenge isn’t just winning matches; it’s also about becoming a bigger part of the conversation in a football-dominated area. ‘How can rugby become a bigger topic in the North East? Football overshadows everything. So how can we rival that? How can we become the talk of the town?’ It’s an ambitious goal, but it reflects his own story: local roots, hard work, and a belief that progress comes step by step.

Whilst his senior career is just developing, I asked him what he would say if he could go back and talk to his 10-year-old self.

“Work hard. Enjoy life. Live in the moment a bit more,” Fletcher says. “Don’t look too far ahead. Things will happen, but just go with it.”

For a player who has already moved through academy systems, university rugby, professional debuts, and now a new era under Red Bull, it’s fitting advice. Ollie Fletcher’s story isn’t just about making it — it’s about enjoying the journey while building something bigger along the way.
