Following the death of Karl Lagerfeld in 2019, the iconic man behind Chanel, the Met Gala’s theme for 2023 honours his legacy and impact on the fashion industry.

Whilst famously known as the founder of the designer brands Chanel and Fendi, Lagerfeld was known for his questionable and controversial remarks too. So, when this year’s Met Gala theme was released, it raised a lot of eyebrows. Back in 2012, he famously fat-shamed Adele when talking to Metro, and criticised Heidi Klum for her larger chest.

Despite being a rather controversial figure for his statements, his designs are notably some of the most influential. This year’s Met Gala will be showcasing his talent, with elegant and regal designs. There’ll definitely be a rush for the Chanel archives!

If anything, I’m expecting something a little similar to ‘Heavenly Bodies’ with regal, intricate, and sophisticated looks. Most of the colours will either be the statement shade of blush pink or a simple (but equally suave) black.

Some celebs to look out for; Cara Delevigne, Kristen Stewart, and Kaia Gerber. However, my personal favourites will be Emma Chamberlain, Blake Lively or Lily-Rose Depp. They always kill their looks, every year.

While this year’s theme has much anticipation - I can imagine other designers are curled up in bed crying to be missing out. Some of the most notable designers, like Gucci or Versace, always produce the best gowns and suits.

Another thing to mention about this year’s theme is it fails to recognise other incredible designers that have recently passed. For example, Virgil Abloh for Off-White. While it’s not exactly ‘Met Gala’, his fashion shows contemporary high fashion like no other. And it’s a shame that he won’t be acknowledged on the level Lagerfeld is being.

That being said, I think this year’s theme will give us some of the best looks yet. It will be very interesting to see Lagerfeld’s legacy showcased on a variety of models (that aren’t all slim, white girls.) I bet that would make him turn in his grave.
