Following the disbandment of Brooklyn-based rock band ‘The Skins’, the lead singer began her solo journey just five years ago. For a supposed newcomer, BAYLI has undeniably mastered the artistry of modern pop since 2018. She draws inspiration across all genres, citing musical influences from Lauryn Hill to Grimes: this only indicates the innovative blend of electronic and R&B sounds that listeners of her discography should anticipate.
Last year saw the release of her second project, ‘stories 2’, the awaited sequel to her debut EP, ‘stories from new york’. Both are titled suitably, given BAYLI’s impeccable capacity to paint vivid pictures through her lyrics. Her storytelling ability is perhaps epitomised in ‘16’, the 2021 single which recounts the life story of BAYLI's mother, exploring how her ambitious character impacted the musician.
Aside from the memoir-esque writing, listeners will find additional pockets of personal life throughout both EPs. At times, this is vulnerable. Elsewhere, this representation is defiant. The recent ‘TELLY BAG’ celebrates BAYLI’s queer identity (whilst doing so in the most casual of manners). It is not regularly that you expect to hear a chorus followed up by the words: “But you’re so straight and I’m so gay.”
Although, having said that, I feel like expectations are to be thrown out of the window before tucking into the delight that is BAYLI’s catalogue.
