This was further reinforced midweek as Liverpool cantered past Newcastle and Arsenal were held to a goalless stalemate against a resilient Nottingham Forest.
Arsenal now trail Liverpool by 13 points which does seem like an unassailable margin to claw back, even with a game-in-hand.
History falls in the favour of Arne Slot’s side, the greatest margin ever overturned at this stage of the season was 11 points when Arsenal reeled Manchester United back in during the 1997/98 campaign. However, that Manchester United team did not possess the seeming infallibility of this Liverpool side and Mikel Arteta’s men pale in comparison to Arsene Wenger’s terrific team of that era.

Predictably, Arne Slot was more cautious.
"In every other league, having a lead like this would be very comfortable, but not in this league," he said. "There is a challenge in every game. We even saw Plymouth Argyle challenging us in the FA Cup.
"The fans can sing what they want but we know how hard we have to work. Someone asked me after we drew at Aston Villa whether we were having a dip. I never believed that and I'm not going to say anything now."
A defiant Mikel Arteta said he would concede the title to Liverpool “over his dead body” and insisted Arsenal could still be crowned champions.
In the back of his mind, Arteta must realise its over. For this Liverpool team are superior in every important metric: most goals, most shots, highest expected goals and have the league’s best attacker in Mo Salah.
There have many been many games where Liverpool have flattered to deceive this season but often, have come out on top. The same cannot be said for their closest challengers, Arsenal’s loss to West Ham last weekend proves that.
So if you haven’t already, its time to jump on the bandwagon, your 2024/25 Premier League Champions – Liverpool.
