This International Women's Day, I am sharing some of the women I admire for having an impact on the world. These are women from a range of professions that are all equally admirable for the work they do, particularly in support of women's rights.

Nadia Whittome

The Labour MP for Nottingham East, Nadia Whittome is the youngest MP in the United Kingdom. Upon her being elected in 2019, Whittome pledged to keep a £35k (after tax) salary and donate the remaining £79k to local charities. This wasn't a one off: she donated £2k of her salary to the strike fund during last summer's rail strikes. Identifying as queer, Whittome often stands up for LGBTQ+ rights, women's rights and fights against climate change.

Emily Maitlis

Currently hosting The News Agents podcast alongside Jon Sopel and Lewis Goodall, Emily Maitlis is an accomplished journalist of over 20 years. As one of the main presenters of BBC's Newsnight programme, Maitlis interviewed Prince Andrew. This interview won her two awards at the 2020 RTS Television Journalism Awards and is being turned into a film titled Scoop with The X-Files' Gillian Anderson starring as Maitlis. She released her book Airhead in 2019 which focuses on the production of television news.

Roo Powell

The founder of Safe from Online Sexual Abuse (SOSA), Roo Powell is a mother who is determined to protect minors from predators online. In 2021, SOSA opened it's doors to a camera crew for a documentary, titled Undercover Underage, to show audiences the dangers facing children online and how SOSA investigates predators, aiding law enforcement across the US. Powell takes on a difficult job that must be extremely mentally draining; she 'plays' the role of the teen decoy (in the documentary she takes on the role of a fifteen year old). It's a devastating job but Roo Powell is truly a guardian angel for all the vulnerable children out there.

Emma Watson

Best known for starring as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter films, Emma Watson hasn't let her childhood role define her. In 2014, she became the UN Women Goodwill Ambassador, supporting their HeForShe campaign in which she gave a memorable speech. She helped launch Time's Up UK which is a non-profit that raises funds for victims of sexual harassment. Furthermore, Watson was appointed to the G7 consulting on women's rights. Her commitment to using her platform to support women's rights is admirable and will leave a legacy more impactful than any role.
