Whether you know him for his career as an actor, or from the picture in his Adidas tracksuit, you have probably heard of Robert Pattinson. Well-known for his roles in Harry Potter, Twilight and The Batman, Pattinson is a dynamic actor commended for not conforming to what the audience expects. Last week marked the release of the sci-fi/comedy Mickey 17 starring Pattinson as Mickey Barnes. Pattinson has previously tacked sci-fi in the 2021 palindrome Tenet, but he has not yet tackled comedy. Mickey 17 has received a 78% Rotten Tomatoes rating implying he has adapted to the genre successfully, so how does he do it?

Pattinson’s career began to take off with his role as Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. This set the tone for Pattinson as an actor as the popular, rosy-cheeked heartthrob whom Harry looked up to. The setting of high school continued into one of the most memorable roles of Pattinson’s career as the vampire Edward Cullen in The Twilight Saga. Twilight peaked in popularity around 2008-2013 which follows the span of leads Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson’s relationship. Everything in Pattinson’s personal and professional life at the time revolved around Twilight.

Like his co-worker Daniel Radcliffe experienced with never being able to shake the role of Harry Potter, Pattinson ran the risk of always being associated with the sparkling Edward Cullen, a feat I believe Pattinson has successfully thwarted. So how did he manage to break the mould?

After the success of those movies, Pattinson began working on lesser-known films such as The Rover and The Lighthouse allowing him to show his capabilities beyond acting as a high school student. In 2022, Pattinson took on the iconic superhero Batman in a darker, edgier re-telling. This role earned Pattinson a nomination for a Saturn Award for Best Actor. It feels as if Pattinson is aware of how his audience view him and when he realised his Twilight fanbase was screaming teenage girls, he has challenged the audience’s perception of him and acted in an entirely different genre. That is the mark of a talented actor.

Pattinson is set to be cast in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming re-telling of The Odyssey set to release in 2026. There is no doubt Pattinson will continue to challenge and defy our expectations as he tackles the epic poem’s translation onto the big screen.
