Electronic Blanket: Week 17

Sophie Ahmed chats about boat parties and twisting her melon, man

12th May 2016

Even though it did snow on a couple of occasions in April, as we move into May people are starting to get excited about summer and of course: boat parties. Partying in a club is considered overrated these days as dancing to your favourite tunes and getting smashed on water is now all the rage. I even opted to go to the Marine Biology ball on a boat recently, rather than my own English ball. Boat parties are setting sail all over the electronic music world as well, with Outlook Festival releasing a line up of DJs this month to soundtrack a cruise across the Adriatic Sea. Hideout, another Croatian festival, has just announced a string of 16 boat parties which will be taking place between 26th and 30th June. These include a Gorgon City Kingdom Boat, My Nu Leng Boat, Dusky Presents Boat, and What Hannah Wants Boat. But, don’t think that these exciting voyages are exclusive to those basking in the Croatian heat because there are a few taking place on the River Tyne too. Bounce on the Boat - Part 1 takes place on 8th June and has just announced its first headliner, Franklin.

You Need To Hear: Recondite

Now that exam season looms and essay deadlines are on the horizon, the search for an electronic blanket of sound to hibernate in is well underway. I don’t know about you, but if I listen to anything with vocals when I’m studying I find myself typing the lyrics up by mistake. If I listen to anything too upbeat I just lose concentration altogether, and working in silence makes me lose the will to live. The remedy to all of these problems is a record fittingly entitled Placid by Recondite, a German producer also known as Lorenz Brunner. Whilst the album title is probably a pun if we consider the fact his 2012 release was called On Acid, the literal meaning of the word does apply to the overall sound. The opening track ‘Compel’ does just that with the repetition of an eerie 3 note idea, but when the beat kicks in it’s clear that this album will provide us with the perfect balance of easy-listening and energy. Recondite recruits Berlin-based duo Tale of Us on ‘Sequenze’, a track which gradually unfolds and is glittered by shimmering percussion. The title-track is as tranquil as you’d expect, with a simple melody rising and falling over a static bassline and 4/4 beat. If you need to focus, get this cranked up to 10 in the Robbo.

Preview: Bez (Happy Mondays) DJ Set, 13th May, World Headquarters

This weekend I’m going back to my Bolton roots for a night of Acid, Rave and all the classics with Bez. For one night only, World HQ will be transformed into The Haçienda with the Happy Mondays’ mascot inciting some freaky dancin’ from behind the decks. Following on from Ms Dynamite last week, Bez is the next in a series of celebs to visit the club, as he’s well known for his appearances on Celebrity Big Brother, Pimp My Ride and even dabbling in politics. Another pioneer of the Manchester Acid House scene, A Guy Called Gerald was here a few months ago and his defining track ‘Voodoo Ray’ will probably make an appearance on Friday. This track was included on a Madchester compilation called Bez’s Madchester Anthems: Sorted Tunes From Back In The Day!, so if that’s anything to go by, we can also expect tunes from the likes of 808 State, New Order and The Stone Roses. This isn’t one for all you 24 Hour Party People to miss.
