Annual event Movember will be commencing in the coming month, championing equality for men in the space of mental well-being. The term, coined in 1999 to promote growing moustaches for charity, was later built upon to raise awareness around men’s health. Consequently, Mo bros and sisters were born. Through facial hair, movement, hosting, and going your own way, a stand is taken with projects and research necessitating conversations globally.

Locally, Andysmanclub offer peer groups across the United Kingdom and online to help redefine power. There has been a growing amount of content platformed on social media prescribing men with their dream life, so long as they are not effeminate. These safe spaces aim to bring men solace in knowing it is okay to talk and have experiences beyond bravado. Manhealth similarly provide peer support, challenging notions that men are to get on with how they are feeling solo and without shedding a tear.

Narrowing this down to the North East, community acceptance is crucial for access to care and being united for all the right reasons.

Resources given are oftentimes free, as seen with James’ place therapy, for those uncertain about where to turn. On their site, you can read stories and opt to talk to a professional for finding meaning and coping with personal circumstances.
