Posters are great in adding to that initial flair of personality to the room, as some rooms, I'm sure some of the older years can attest to this, can resemble a dreary looking prison cell or even a dingy primary school cupboard. Putting up photos of your family, friends or pets helps in making your room feel more like home. Fairy or LED lights continue to be a popular choice amongst students too as they are usually affordable while also being aesthetically pleasing to look at.
Plants are brilliant in making a room feel more lived in, plus they can improve your mental health. It can be as simple as having a low maintenance plant such as a cactus or a succulent. While it sometimes can be a battle in keeping them alive, as I have learned from personal experience, it is worth having even just one as they benefit your well-being from the impact they have on your mind. Take a visit to Grainger Market as they have a range of plants for a good price or stay alert for when there are plant sales on campus in the coming weeks.
Some items you can include are the classic university desk lamp every student should have, perhaps a colourful rug, your most treasured books or little trinkets and memorabilia from past holidays. Storage boxes are useful in keeping everything organised and create room when you are limited in space. Sticking to a colour palette can make the room feel like a harmonious sanctuary, although I do enjoy a bit of mismatch too.
There are many other ways that you can make your room feel more like home, but I hope for those of you that have been struggling for ideas and are currently homesick that this gives you a starting point in getting creative. So happy decorating and good luck with your new university life!
