Kato - Saville Row:
Just off Northumberland Street, you will find Kato: a Pan-Asian restaurant with an expansive, affordable menu. I cannot count how many times I’ve turned to Kato when in need of something delicious, filling and in line with my student budget. Their breaded chicken katsu curry is a student staple from just £7.50. Feeling extra? Swap to fried rice for just an additional £1.50.
Kato also offers several tasty vegetarian options such as their Breaded Pumpkin (my personal favourite). Enjoy it on a bed of steamed rice or fried noodles, then choose from Curry or Tare sauce, both from £8.75.
I have never been disappointed by this spot and find that, no matter who asks, I always end up recommending it.
Dough Daze - Ridley Place:
A six-minute walk from Campus, just around the corner from the Five Swans is Dough Daze. This indie pizzeria graced our city in September 2022, bringing us authentic New York slices and 90s vibes. Each 12” pizza comes in at less than £10 and single slices at just £2.50.
My go-to is the ‘G.O.A.T.’, and it certainly lives up to its name: Fior di Latte, goat’s cheese, caramelised onions, basil and balsamic glaze and it is all yours for £8.50.
NE1 Lunch Club – Various locations:
Every Tuesday, between 11am and 2pm, vendors across the city take part in the NE1 Lunch Club offering your favourite midday meals at a fraction of a cost. Here are just a few close to campus:
Acropolis - Grainger Market: ‘Cheeky Ziki’ for £7.50
North Shore Coffee - Grainger Market: Any sandwich or toastie and soft drink for £7.50.
Cubanos – Grainger Market: Any sandwich, drinks and crisps for £10.

The Tyne Bar - Quayside:
Fancy some free food? To redeem, all you have to do is spend £7 on anything at the bar between 7pm and 9pm. Each week brings a new dish, offering both meat and vegan options and it’s not your average pub grub. In previous weeks, the Tyne Bar has served:
