Imagine you’re six years old again on a serene spring morning, sitting cross-legged on the living room floor with your sibling, gazing up at the TV in awe, utterly immersed in your new favourite birthday gift, Kirby’s Epic Yarn.

Released on the Wii back in 2011 in the UK, this forgotten gem is a heartwarming addition to the series featuring Nintendo’s most iconic pink character. The 2D action-platformer game introduces a fresh style to the familiar face as Kirby is sucked into a world crafted entirely of cloth by the evil sorcerer, Yin-Yarn, who has torn the land apart. With the help of Prince Fluff, Kirby and his new pal set out to defeat the nefarious enchanter and stitch Patch Land back together again.

It's the equivalent of reaching a warm hug or curling up in a cosy blanket...

This charming game makes it virtually impossible for you to be in a bad mood. It’s the equivalent of receiving a warm hug or curling up in a cosy blanket with a mug of hot chocolate on a chilly winter day. The beautifully unique visual design is hard to ignore, featuring pastel colour palettes and a captivating blend of fabric as though you are wandering through an arts and crafts store. The music is equally delightful, with its heavenly melodies that perfectly amplify the happiness the game radiates.

Kirby's Epic Yarn perfectly captures the essence of childlike wonder and innocence.

Aside from its whimsical nature, the game offers so much more, including hide-and-seek challenges, soundtrack unlockables and a customisable apartment. Bursting with personality, Kirby’s Epic Yarn perfectly captures the essence of childlike wonder and innocence. It lets you experience a world of endless possibilities as you watch Kirby transform into a dolphin, a UFO, a firetruck and even a giant tank to help combat enemies.

Games shouldn't have to be painstakingly difficult in order to feel satisfactory.

These dreamy elements easily make it stand out from the other Kirby games. While Kirby’s Epic Yarn is often criticised for being too easy, given that it is impossible to die, I’d argue that games shouldn’t have to be painstakingly difficult in order to feel satisfactory. The sheer creativity and cuteness of Kirby’s Epic Yarn make it a thoroughly enjoyable and fulfilling experience.

The most infuriating part of the game is attempting to collect enough gems to move onto the next level and trying to work the motion controls correctly to drive the train. Even the Waddle Dees are adorable, you can’t help but feel ashamed for harming the poor creatures.

For anyone looking to relax from their studies, Kirby’s Epic Yarn is the perfect childhood classic to dive back into. I have so many wholesome memories of playing this game as a kid and I’d give anything to be able to experience that again for the first time.
