Newcastle has recently been named the friendliest city in Britain by 1.5 million people on social media. The travel company, Big7 asked their followers to vote for their favourite city in the United Kingdom and once the votes were in, it was clear that the Geordies were the ouright winners.

Voters recognised Newcastle as the most welcoming and charismatic city from the list given, coming top with Glasgow in second place, and York in third. Nearby city, Durham, ranked 17 out of 50.

The city was praised for its history, lively atmosphere and diverse culture which caters for those of all ages. Newcastle is renowned for its Quayside, particularly the Tyne Bridge, the Baltic museum and of course the famous Angel of the North. Newcastle’s Universities also play a huge part in the city and because of the huge number of students that attend both Newcastle and Northumbria University, the city ensures that there is always something ‘going on’.

When asked about this result, Big 7 said: "Newcastle takes top spot thanks to its lively locals, engaging social scene and ease of access for first time visitors”.

"It’s family-friendly and safe, with heaps of culture and makes visitors soon feel like locals. The atmosphere in Newcastle and beyond is hard to match, with a homey feel and locals who go the extra mile to welcome tourists”.
