The 2026/2027 Rugby premiership season is almost here as Newcastle Red Bull fans are keen to get back to Kingston Park and are hoping for a more memorable season than last, or even the last four.

Despite a promising takeover from the energy drink company Red Bull last August, the setup started poorly as the Red Bulls finished dead last with a mere 12 points. Almost a year on since the club’s rebrand, and it feels like the project is still awaiting take-off.

The team was simply not competitive enough last season. They conceded huge score lines (an average of 48 points per game while scoring just 18), struggled defensively and rarely threatened opponents. The squad lacked depth, with an absence of physicality, experience and overall quality. Financial constraints also meant they couldn’t retain or recruit top-level players.

Financial constraints also meant they couldn’t retain or recruit top-level players.

Earlier this year, the Rugby Football Union’s Council announced that they are completely scrapping traditional promotion and relegation to and from the top-tier Prem due to minimum standards based on standard of play, finances, investment potential, infrastructure and geographical location, that need to be met by the clubs bidding to go up. With no real threat of dropping out of the league, Newcastle Red Bulls have been left in a position where their results carried no real consequences and gave way to a less motivated campaign.

Fans should however remain hopeful for this new season as the club promises an exciting new era for the Red Bulls, with some old and new faces, a revived ambition and continued financing to rebuild and refresh the entirety of the club.

A busy transfer window has meant a hefty 23 new signings for the Newcastle Red Bulls. Oscar Usher, the club’s Young Player of the Season and North East local, has agreed to a new three-year contract. Argentinian forward Franco Molina, English scrum-half Raffi Quirke and former Sale Sharks winger Obi Ene will also be seen wearing the Red Bulls shirt this upcoming season.

Since the takeover, Kingston Park Stadium has undergone the full Red Bull makeover. From fireworks and entertainment overhaul, to branding left, right and centre and upgraded facilities, they have certainly made their mark and enhanced the matchday experience. Some fans, however, are concerned that while there is a lot of excitement surrounding the glamorous experience, they would hate to see the Falcons’ identity, history and tradition, that is integral to the club at its core, be put aside. What cannot be disputed is the sharp rise in ticket sales since Red Bull came in, with record-breaking season ticket numbers, multiple sell-outs and sustained demand going into 2026-27.

With many changes and a desire to prove themselves, let’s hope this year is finally the Red Bulls year to turn it around and make the North East supporters proud!
