Established in 1971, the Times Higher Education, or THE, is a UK data organisation and higher education magazine best known for its annual publication of global university rankings.
THE’s rankings evaluate all its institutions on 11 subject areas, as well as overall performance and does so by scoring each institution on five criterions: research quality, industry, international outlook, research environment and teaching.
In this year’s subject rankings, Newcastle University placed within the world’s top 85 higher education institutions for Medicine and Health—a category that encompasses many disciplines, such as medicine, dentistry, and nursing.
This is a notable improvement from Newcastle’s position in 2025, when it was ranked in the top 90, demonstrating progress in the quality of education of the health sciences.
Professor Chris Day, Vice-Chancellor and President of Newcastle University, said: “We’re proud to be a University which offers a wide range of subjects to our students and this league table reflects the breadth in excellence of our disciplines. We are also pleased to see that while we have risen in the rankings for Medical and Health, we have maintained our position in other areas showing stability during what is an increasingly competitive landscape in Higher Education.”
