Many British/ Irish films such as Kneecap and Love Lies Bleeding get no honourable mentions at the Oscars - is this a hint that British films aren’t appreciated by the wider world? This lack of acknowledgement on a global level perhaps necessitates a diversion away from the Hollywood gaze. Many smaller productions such as Hard Truths are given limelight the Oscars refuse to give them. Does this suggest that smaller films shouldn’t be considered for global awards? Absolutely not! If anything, the Oscars should consider nominating films made by smaller names in order to showcase a wider range of talent. However, there are some glaring gaps in the nominations. A Real Pain fails to reach the level of popularity it reached in the US – despite its incredible message. ‘Wicked’ gets surprisingly few nominations at the BAFTAS – perhaps indicative of the industry’s frustration with movie musicals. Perhaps just a difference in taste, perhaps a signal of division; the BAFTA winners definitely vary greatly from the Oscar nominations. All we can collectively agree on is the sigh of relief we all breathed when Emilia Perez was nominated for much less BAFTAS – for that, they are correct.
