Helmed by Luca Guadagnino, acclaimed director of Call Me By Your Name, the series follows teenagers Fraser (Jack Dylan Grazer) and Caitlin (Jordan Kristine Harper) as they bond and come-of-age on an American military base in Veneto, Italy. According to HBO, We Are Who We Are “explores typical teenage drama themes including friendship, love and overall confusion — only in this little slice of America in Italy.”
From the teaser, we can see that the series will focus on both Fraser and Caitlin’s dysfunctional homelives, which ultimately brings them together as social outcasts. Fraser must cope with being uprooted from his home in New York to adjusting to his new life on the military base with his mothers Sarah (Chloe Sevigny) and Maggie (Alice Braga), who seem to fail to understand him. In contrast, Caitlin has a close relationship with her father Richard (Kid Cudi) but a strained one with her mother Jenny (Faith Alabi). Where Caitlin seems confident and outgoing, Fraser is introverted and shy.
Hopefully Guadagnino will repeat his arthouse direction style, which made Call Me By Your Name so memorable and unique
With Guagagnino seemingly putting a fresh spin on the common coming-of-age tale, We Are Who We Are is already drawing in comparisons with HBO’s other successful teen-oriented series Euphoria. Heading into familiar territory with the coming-of-age narrative and LGBTQ themes, it will be no surprise if Guaganino achieves the same success as he did three years previously with his Oscar-winning film Call Me By Your Name. Hopefully Guadagnino will repeat his arthouse direction style, which made Call Me By Your Name so memorable and unique, in this series.

Fresh off his success in hit films such as It and Shazam!, I can’t wait to see Jack Dylan Grazer take on what seems to be a more serious, mature role. Whilst we already know he’s brilliant with comedic timing and has great chemistry with his film co-stars, I don’t see why he won’t have the same level of chemistry opposite newcomer Jordan Kristine Seamon. Whilst we patiently wait for second series of Euphoria, We Are Who We Are looks like it will be another winner with audiences.
We Are Who We Are will air in the UK on BBC Three, with an official release date still unknown at this time.
