While photographing a pod of orcas near Rausu, Hayakawa noticed an individual unlike any he had seen before - with ashen skin, standing out among their black-and-white podmates. Overwhelmed with excitement, he documented the encounter, later sharing on Instagram that his hands trembled as he took the photos. “My legs were shaking as I photographed the white orcas I met for the first time,” Hayakawa wrote on Instagram. “[It] looks like a golden-ish cream-coloured orca synthesized into a blue sea. I still think it was a dream.”
Determined to learn more, Hayakawa returned to the same spot soon after, hoping to photograph the white orca again. To his surprise, yet another white orca appeared—this time, a female. The discovery of two leucistic orcas within the same region further deepened the mystery surrounding their rare appearance and sparked discussions among marine biologists about the possibility of a unique genetic trait within this particular pod.
Experts believe the orcas’ unusual colouration is caused by leucism, a genetic condition that results in partial pigmentation loss. Unlike albinism, which eliminates melanin completely and often causes pinkish eye colouration, leucistic animals typically retain normal eye colour and may display patches of pigment. Hayakawa observed that these particular orcas had dark eyes, supporting the leucism theory.
Although white orcas are extremely rare, this is not the first recorded sighting. Similar leucistic orcas have been documented in other parts of the world, including a young calf nicknamed “Frosty” spotted off the coast of Southern California in 2023. However, the chance of encountering even one remains incredibly low, making Hayakawa’s sighting of two in a single area an extraordinary event.
The photographs have captivated wildlife enthusiasts worldwide, drawing attention to the hidden wonders of marine life. Hayakawa, whose work aims to showcase the beauty of Japan’s wildlife, hopes that sharing these images will deepen public appreciation for ocean conservation and the remarkable creatures that inhabit it. His discovery serves as a reminder of the many mysteries the ocean still holds and the importance of protecting its inhabitants for future generations.
