Late last year, award-winning actor Barry Keoghan was reported to be stepping into the role of drummer Ringo Starr. Keoghan is known for his versatile work in films such as The Banshees of Inisherin and Saltburn. This compelling casting choice definitely adds to the excitement around the much-anticipated project. Having embodied quite complex male characters in the past, he may just be the perfect pick to portray the band’s jokester and often understated member.
“I believe he’s somewhere taking drum lessons… and I hope not too many”, Ringo Starr joked in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. So, what can we expect from the Irish actor? Keoghan’s knack for nuanced performances suggests he is well-equipped to capture both sides of Starr: the endearing wit that has captured the hearts of many fans all over the world and the humble, but innovative artistry that made him an essential part of the Fab Four.
From the driving rhythms of 'Ticket to Ride' to the epic drum solo in 'The End', Starr’s distinctive drumming is often underappreciated, but he had a significant part in defining the band’s sound and success. Both on and off-stage, Ringo’s humility and razor-sharp humour made him a well-loved member to this day—qualities Keoghan will likely emphasise in his portrayal.
While Ringo’s abilities were often overshadowed by his bandmates, there is an emotional story behind his approachable charm. Growing up in a rough neighbourhood in Liverpool, his childhood was marked by severe illnesses. Interestingly, he was also the first Beatle to quit the band for a while, only to return to a flower-decorated studio and his mates begging him to come back. The eventual breakup of the Beatles took a heavy toll on him.
With Sam Mendes in the director’s seat and Barry Keoghan behind the drums, we can hopefully expect a thorough and heartfelt exploration of Starr’s character. Undoubtedly, capturing the versatility, brilliance and humanity of the Beatles is going to be a hard day’s night, but I’ve got a feeling this team can work it out—with a little help from their friends.
