slowthai’s previous album Tyron was a retrospective comeback from his controversial appearance at the 2020 NME awards. The Northampton rapper, born Tyron Frampton, came under fire when he was accused of sexually harassing comedian Katherine Ryan which almost saw his career crumble. This time slowthai returns with his third studio album, UGLY, an acronym for U Gotta Love Yourself. The star notes “This album was me trying to emulate the spirit of the brotherhood ethos that bands have”. To commemorate the release of the album the rapper made the decision to get UGLY permanently tattooed on his face suggesting that this is an album to remember.

UGLY opens with the song 'Yum' which repeats several positive affirmations including “You are great, you are good, you’re king” which one would assume might go with a motivational feel-good accompaniment. Instead, the star made the creative decision to feature an uncomfortable and slightly jarring build-up that blends into intense screaming and panicked breathing. Track 4, 'Feel Good', is vastly different as Tyron experiments with the idea of making “a pop song that’s not a pop song”.

UGLY is a prime example to listeners that you can successfully build yourself up in a world that makes you feel alone

The star told Apple Music that the intention and drive behind the song was to motivate himself on a difficult day. The song is preppy and uplifting with the melody embellishing the lyrics. UGLY’s finale, '25% Club', is a raw and moving lullaby that contrasts the opening of the album. The song reminds listeners that everyone is searching for the missing piece to fit their personal jigsaw puzzle, yet you do not necessarily need it to feel complete.

Evidently, UGLY has it all; it is an album that leaves you feeling a kaleidoscope of emotions. slowthai has mastered the art of fusing genres together, blending rap, alternative rock and indie rhythms to create an authentic, intense and inspiring listening experience. The star almost lost everything after becoming a victim of cancel culture in 2020, however, it seems that he has only been going up since. In fact, Tyron has big things ahead as he is set to embark on his UGLY world tour in September 2023. UGLY is a prime example to listeners that you can successfully build yourself back up in a world that makes you feel alone.
