Slugtown is a gallery run by two former art students and prides itself in being a non-profit art gallery. It began in the front room of a student house and has moved around ever since, currently showcasing in Shieldfield, Newcastle. They focus on creating a sense of community by running a free monthly art club for local youth called ‘SlugClub’. Professional artists are encouraged to run workshops for SlugClub to help spark some inspiration and teach new skills that club members may have not learned otherwise. The former students running the gallery (Matt and Max) touched on how they didn’t want to feel alienated in the area the gallery was in and they placed importance on involving everyone in the residential area.
The most recent exhibition was Faces, Faces by Ki Yoong which is a series of small portraits which have the most gorgeous sense of illuminated colour. The whole gallery gets transformed for specific exhibitions and holds a range of contemporary collections from emerging artists, I strongly suggest you check out previous exhibitions on their website; slugtown.co.uk
While you’re visiting….
not feeling convinced yet? Well, right next door houses Big River Bakery where you can treat yourself to a sweet treat and a cuppa or a cheeky stottie. The staff are super friendly and there’s always a table outside so you can cosy up with your favourite hot drink, get some fresh air and have a breather from uni work. For anyone struggling with things to do with your mates, you won’t be disappointed.
