The Aasai Ball.
Organised annually by the Tamil and Malayali Society, the Aasai Ball is always a much-anticipated event that brings students from across the South Asian community together. It’s a night that gives the guys a chance to put on their sharpest suits and favourite sherwanis and gives the women an excuse to absolutely STUN in their gorgeous lehengas, saris, Punjabi suits, and fusion fits. Seriously, the desi girlies don’t play when it comes to fashion, they showed up and ate down.
The dancers followed suit. As soon as dinner was served (the caterers weren’t playing either), the TAMSoc committee took to the floor with a medley of South Indian hits that had us all cheering and dancing in our seats. As if the bar wasn’t already high enough, a group of 20-30 dancers, made up of the committee, some of Just Bollywood’s 3rd place-winners, Team Newcastle’s crew, and other exceptional dancers brought the house down. They delivered a high-energy, super entertaining, and excellently choreographed danceathon in true South style which had the rest of us on the dance floor almost immediately.
But along with the fun, it’s also a wholesome night for many of the community's students to come together and connect through music, food, and dance. As one attendee, Nandini-Sia, put it, “It’s such a celebration of our friendship and connection to our culture!”
