Newcastle University Sub Aqua Society (NUSAC) offers the opportunity for students to get SCUBA diving qualifications. Open to all students at Newcastle university, the societycombines professional SCUBA diving training, regular socials and national/international trips to see some of the most beautiful underwater life in the world.
NUSAC provides a range of internationally recognized diving qualifications. Beginners can start with the Open Water course, which qualifies divers to depth of 18 meters, before progressing to Advanced certification, allowing dives up to 30 meters. For those keen to build confidence and safety awareness, the rescue diver course focuses on emergency response and dive safety skills. The society also offers a Drysuit Diver qualification, ideal for exploring colder waters. Not quite ready to commit? NUSAC runs regular “try dives” in local Newcastle pools, giving students the chance to experience SCUBA diving in a relaxed and supportive environment before signing up to a full course.
Beyond training, NUSAC prides itself on its welcoming and inclusive community. The society hosts fortnightly socials ranging from themes pub crawls to sober events such as beach barbecues. Activity-based socials include trampolining, swimming sessions and beach cleans, with more events planned throughout the year. Whether you’re a seasoned diver or completely new to the sport, there are plenty of opportunities to meet like-minded people.
This easter break, members can also look forward to international trips to Mallorca and the Red Sea. The Mallorca trip (24-31st March) offers a week exploring some of the Mediterranean’s most stunning underwater landscapes. No prior diving experience is required, as students can gain their qualification during the trip. Priced at £650 plus flights (Approximately £35 return), it is a great opportunity to fully immerse yourself in the sport and make some lasting connections to others in the society.
