As part of the promotional run up to the release of Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Insomnia have announced that everyone who pre-orders a copy of the follow-up to the 2018 PS4 Marvel game will have a suit based off Sony’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse unlocked automatically on release date.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales continues the story from the first Spider-Man game, along with its DLC additional content, where the players can follow Morales a year after he was bitten by a radioactive spider. Miles Morales was first introduced in the Ultimate Marvel comic storyline in 2011, following the death of that universe’s Peter Parker, where he subsequently took up the mantle of Spider-Man. Morales has since been adapted into other Marvel storylines, most notably in the Oscar-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse animated film, also released in 2018.

In addition to recreating the look of Morales' suit, the developers have also applied the low frame rate stylistic choice the film uses, causing the player character to move at 12fps, adding a new dimension to the suit's cosmetics.

Into the Spider-Verse was critically acclaimed for its distinct art style which drew strong inspiration from the comic books as well as other forms of animation. Following such a strong approval, it seems natural that Insomnia would include a direct reference to the film in the form of one of the suits available in the game, following the popular feature of the original game: which featured famous Spider-Man suits from across the character’s comic history, including a recreation of the ‘Raimi suit’ from the early 2000s’ Samuel Raimi Spider-Man trilogy.

In addition to recreating the look of Morales’ suit, the developers have also applied the low frame rate stylistic choice the film uses, causing the player character to move at 12fps, adding a new dimension to the suit’s cosmetics. Reportedly, this feature can be toggled, allowing players to disable the frame rate aspect whilst also still wearing the suit. The feature also borrows a further element from the film in the form of ‘sound effect bubbles’, which appear during combat.

Whilst pre-orders enable the suit to be unlocked on launch day, Insomnia have confirmed the suit can also be unlocked during the game for anyone who does not pre-order the game.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales is a launch title for the PS5 and will be released for both that console on its release date and for the PS4, on 12 November.
