Halloween is rapidly approaching and for those who choose to remain sober, even on this national holiday, it seems there is nothing to entertain us. That is until Halloween horror rooms appeared.

It’s fair to say that the drinking culture in the UK, particularly that of university students, has become a pressurised environment in which you feel sometimes that you have to participate in to experience the same enjoyment as your peers. This is not the case. Nor should it ever have to be the case! There are masses of activities which you can do sober and with Halloween coming up these opportunities are everywhere, especially if we shift these preconceived notions of Halloween being an opportunity to drink the night away.

Take, for example, the escape rooms of Newcastle: The Riddle Room, EXIT Newcastle, Contagion, The Escape Key Newcastle and Escape Newcastle. Each of these individual companies hosts intricately themed rooms, all of which are planned meticulously for your enjoyment. Themes range from ‘Witchcraft & Wizardry’ to ‘Armageddon’ ensuring there is something for everyone. Within the rooms you have an hour to complete a series of interlinking task, puzzles and clues in order to try and escape, and with many a plot twist within, it can get very hectic and very challenging.

However, do not be deterred! Escape rooms are perfect for celebrating Halloween as each individual themes could very well be the theme of a Halloween costume party, making the room enjoyable simply for the experience. Why not attend in your very own themed costumes? You would certainly make an impression on the games keeper! Some rooms are even branded specifically as horror rooms, ensuring even the thrill seeking among us can get their fill of a Halloween escape room.

No matter which style or theme of room you choose you will most definitely have to be sober. Not only will sobriety ensure your physical safety within the room, it may also help you to decipher puzzles, complete task and collect clues at a much more rapid pace. This is integral to your teams performance as, in the majority of rooms, you only have 60 minutes to escape. With only 60 minutes and a limited number of clues you will have to bring your A-game, making escape rooms the perfect form of high stake entertainment for your sober Halloween night.
