With her upcoming album released and out, Taylor Swift's influence seems to be at an all time high; yet as her influence grows so does her scrutiny over her shifting political presence- does Swift show concern and care or calculated branding when it comes to her activism?

Before I begin, Swifties, brace yourselves - this is a critical take, and I’d like to make it to my next lecture safely.

With her new album up out and in the public eye, Taylor swift yet again becomes a person of debate and controversy in the media, sparking attention and criticism on her blurred political stance. Within her early career, she was notably apolitical; her music was often enjoyed with political-free, personal messaging, in fact many preferred her music stayed out of politics entirely. However, it must be said that in today's heightened climate and political tension in America starting in 2016, it became swiftly clear (no pun intended) that silence was not key to success.

2018 was the start of Swift's public political engagement, endorsing the democratic candidates in Tennessee, marking a turning point for continued vocalisation of political issues such as LGBTQ+, gender equality and voting rights. This activism was widely welcomed by the general public as a courageous step in the right direction yet the sincerity regarding her timing was questioned - was her newfound activism genuine or merely a use for her own capitalisation as she aligned with a changing fan base and socio-political climate to seem more down to earth and relatable.

However, today Swift yet again reverts to a more conservative and silent stance following her recent relationship with NFL player Travis Kelce, bringing her closer to right wing circles. This was mostly noted after her association with the podcast “bussing with the boys”, famously known for their support of Donald Trump, resulting in some fans expressing disappointment as Taylor reflects how her billionaire status allows her selective activism - choosing to partake in politics when it suits. Moreover, it’s key to note that alienating her MAGA fans would cut off a large portion of her audience - and revenue.

Yet is it fair to single Swift out? Many celebrities navigate their image similarly if not worse. Yet given Swift's degree of influence globally but most prominently in America, does she therefore owe the public accountability and carry a greater responsibility, should she be obligated to state her clear and unwavering opinion? All being said, it’s clear that Taylor's political journey clearly reflects the complexities of a person adapting their views in Americas social and political climate, trying to figure out where they stand in its mess, so should she be given a bit more empathy, or held to accountability?
