You make a lot of friends during your uni career, whether that's undergrad or postgrad, here's my thoughts on the best and worst to be friends with.

Worst:

  1. The one that dates multiple of your friends

Where you ever really friends to begin with? This is the ‘friend’ that you hang around with cause there dating one of your friends, and then another one of your friends, and then another. By the end every bridge you had with this person is burned and your whole friend group will try and avoid them at all costs.

2. The one you never liked

The only good thing about this friend is the vindication you feel when they leave. Sometimes you have to ignore your gut in favour of the group and put the red flags behind you until other people start to see them to.

3. The one that uses you for academic help

We all have people who we look to for help on our courses, but these are the friends who only ever come to you for help and nothing else. They don’t want to chat, they don’t want to offer you help when you ask, they only want to see how they’ve done compared to you and take your notes.

Best:

  1. The ones you make it through second year with

Second year is a tough time: your grades actually count, you're living outside halls and you have to pay bills. The friends you make it through this year with are ride or die and should see you through the rest of your uni career.

2. The ones who dyed your hair in their bathroom

Friends who are willing to desecrate their bathroom with hair dye for your mental breakdowns are willing to take this friendship to the end. They are committed to your happiness and know how to get rid of stains - these are definitely friends for life.

3. The one who helps you write emails

The stress. The panic. The overwhelming sense of dread. Emails are the worst part of my day and the friend that helps you get through them is someone who you should stick with for life.
