1) Barter Books- The most renowned bookshop in Northumberland, if not the entire North of England, is Barter Books in Alnwick. Known to be one of the largest second-hand bookstores in the UK, Barter Books is a book-lover's heaven. Located in a part of Alnwick's old Victorian railway station, the space has been converted into a beautiful second-hand library, with seven different rooms filled with books from every genre imaginable. I guarantee you'll spend hours browsing this one-of-a-kind gem of a bookshop, within the heart of the gorgeous, historic town of Alnwick.
2)The Accidental Bookshop- Another gorgeous bookstore located in Alnwick is The Accidental Bookshop (FORUM books). This bookshop claims to hold the tallest bookshelf in the UK, as well as a stunning range of unique and bestselling books. Many exciting author events and book talks are set to take place in this brand-new shop, with author Damian Le Bas coming to The Accidental Bookshop in May.
FORUM books can also be found in Whitley Bay and Corbridge.
3)Berrydin Books- Berrydin Books, in Berwick-upon-Tweed, is located right by the coast close to Scotland. It's the perfect bookshop to visit if you're stopping off in Berwick on you're heading further North, filled with rare and pre-loved books. Though there is not much information about this mysterious bookshop online, it's known as a book-fan favourite in Northumberland.
4)Slightly Foxed- Another independent bookshop in Berwick is the eccentrically named Slightly Foxed. This bookstore claims to sell 'a wide range of quality second-hand fiction and non-fiction books, for both adults and children.' As well as a brilliant selection of books, Slightly Foxed is also home to many vintage film posters and even a selection of Lowry art prints, so you are likely to leave with more than an armful of books.
5)Cogito Books- Located in the lovely market town of Hexham is the independent bookshop Cogito Books. Tourists come from all over the country to explore the extensive range of books, and to enjoy the tranquil environment of Cogito Books.
