The end of the academic year is rapidly approaching along with the promise of some sun, a holiday and unfortunately deadlines. With the combination of the four week Easter Break and the strikes, it may seem like you're already off, and attendance is optional. However, it really isn’t, and where your attendance is marked this may make or break your grade.

This may be the time where you need to write (and be graded on) a reflective log about your participation throughout the module and how many of us can say we participate amazingly throughout the whole semester? We might try, but it’s never as good as you want it to be. However, the last few weeks can be a good time to make sure you have something interesting to talk about in your participation log - attend, contribute, and keep note of your strongest moments.

Even if you don’t get graded on it, attendance is still very important for all your modules. It means that you won’t miss important information that maybe doesn’t make it’s way onto ReCAP or Canvas and can assure you that you’re up to date in everything. So, for the last few weeks, try to attend as much as possible for your own peace of mind. Remember that university goes quickly but not turning up will make it go much faster (assuming you don’t actually want to get to the end of your university career!)

So how we can we motivate ourselves to get up and turn up? Try to prepare for your seminars and lectures in advance; this will make you much more confidant and more likely to be able to participate. Personally, I like to bribe myself with a nicer homemade lunch (or perhaps a snack at the campus Co-Op) if I am facing a long or harder day. Make sure to make your lunch the night before and pack everything you need, otherwise you’re just adding to your stress in the morning.

It may be true that you’ll get through more more pressing work if you don’t turn up to a seminar or lecture, but I can promise there are many more hours in a day where you will be able to get everything done. It will not make too much of a difference to go to your scheduled sessions, and missed work just snowballs.

In reality, it’s important to try to turn up to all your timetabled hours because you are choosing and paying to be here. Take advantage of everything including your lecturers knowledge!
