As with quite a lot of us, I went into watching My Fault: London expecting to hate it in comparison to Culpa Mia. Imagine my surprise when I finished watching and had fallen in love with the way Charlotte Fassler and Dani Girdwood had adapted the book! And the best thing to come out of that movie: Matthew Broome.

The minute I finished My Fault: London I hopped onto google to find other works starring Matthew Broome. The Guildhall graduate portrays his characters feelings through his eyes, and the subtle nuances in his acting were primarily what made me fall in love with the movie – and what led me to The Buccaneers.

The Buccaneers follows a group of ‘new money’ American women, who follow their new married friend across the pond to England;  wreaking havoc on the conservative English society during the Gilded Age. The plot primarily follows Nan St. George, a 17 year old girl, who’s experiencing the highs and lows of society life for the first time.

The series starts showing the group of five girls, free and unburdened in a way that we all wish we were, getting ready for ‘the wedding of the season.’ There’s dancing, dresses I’d die to wear and happiness that permeates through the screen, encapsulating Nan and her friends.

…Enter Matt Broome.

Broome plays Guy Thwarte, a member of English society, bumping into Nan as she’s climbing out of a window. He’s the epitome of a gentleman, and the two have an instant connection, the type where you know they would be each others best friend in their relationship.

They orbit each other through the first episode, flirting in the most innocent way. Guy is then called back to England urgently, leaving the viewer with a weird sense of loss – the same loss you feel when you ponder the ‘what could have been.’

Stick with me now; The Buccaneers is a love triangle. Nan’s second love interest appears when she adventures through Cornwall, meeting Theo (ironically played by someone called Guy Remmers) and befriending him.

The series is paced so well, and may be the only love triangle I can endorse (because for me there’s a clear winner). The Buccaneers is well worth the watch, and it will draw you in and hold you hostage with the depth of its characters and plots.

And you know the best bit? Season Two will be out soon!
