The Open Photography Competition has been reintroduced to the Arts section, where anyone can submit work at no cost with no specific theme.

If you have a photograph that you would like to submit to the competition, please send it to me by email or come along to the weekly SMAs and come and chat with the arts section! Being the first week, there weren't too many entries, but the work I was sent was such high quality, making my life very difficult. So... with no delay here are the runners-up and the winner of this week's photography competition.

Congratulations to... Scarlet Davies! The perfectly timed and poised squirrel captured as it is camouflaged within a rocky landscape is so successful and I know it would have taken skill to capture such an image.

I have selected two runners-up for their colourful and enigmatic images. Erin Neal with her image of a disco ball and Meghan Grimston for her submission of two of her favourite clowns from her extensive collection.

Erin's image beautifully uses colour, as the lime green reflects off the ball in contrast to the dark surroundings, creating a feeling of dancing in a dark room with colour glittering off the ball. The chalkboard and the reflection of the room in the fragmented mirror give the piece a subtle context and a great sense of place.

Meghan's on the other hand captures a playfulness and intimacy between two dolls in her collection that conveys her connection and care for these objects within her possession - they are clearly more than just objects to her. The use of overhead stark lighting in the photo shows the variety of colours and textures that make each clown unique and also shows how well looked after they are. The shadow cast over one of their faces cast by its hat creates a duality between the clowns that can be compared to the comedy and tragedy masks in drama, just like a clown's persona.
