Dan Burn, the 32-year-old defender from Blyth, grew up supporting Newcastle United before being officially signed by the club in January 2022. He played for Newcastle as a boy, before being let go at age 11. He then played for the likes of Brighton and Wigan, establishing himself as a premier-league player. Since joining Newcastle United in 2022, he has scored many iconic goals for the team, leading to several wins.
Burn has now solidified himself amongst the ranks of previous Newcastle United legends like Alan Shearer after scoring the first Newcastle goal at the Carabao Cup on March 16th, contributing to the huge win, the club's first domestic trophy since 1955. The Carabao Cup win has been massive for Newcastle United supporters, with black and white stripes adorning the entire city.
Burn was called up to play for England days before this historic win. Since the Cup final, he has been bestowed with another honour, the Freedom of Northumberland. Upon announcing this, the Northumberland County Council leader, Glen Sanderson, said: "It's a great victory for the region and the fact a local lad played such a crucial part in this journey is wonderful...I intend to nominate Dan for the highest honour we can bestow; the Freedom of Northumberland."
This ceremonial honour is only granted to members of the community who have made outstanding contributions, recognising their service. Previous individuals who have been bestowed the 'Freedom of Northumberland' include Lioness Lucy Bronze, from Berwick-upon-Tweed. Dan Burn now sits within the ranks of Northumberland's most significant progeny- a well-deserved recognition.
