The secret to meeting people anywhere and everywhere.

Why meeting new people is easier than you think ...

Meeting new people sounds easy, right? You step outside, smile, start chatting… and boom, instant friendship. But let’s be honest, most of us avoid eye contact and have perfected the art of pretending to be super busy on our phones just to dodge conversations.

We’re surrounded by potential friendships everywhere: on the bus, in class, the library, even the bathroom at the bar. Yet somehow, we act like we’re on airplane mode. Opening your mouth can be scary. What if you seem weird? What if they don’t respond? Or worse, what if you end up friends with someone obsessed with the oddest hobbies?

A quirky conversation starter is always better than awkward silence.

The truth is, the secret isn’t really a secret. Newcastle is full of opportunities to meet people: classes, societies, NUSU events, pubs, clubs, even the laundry room in your accommodation. But just showing up isn’t enough. You have to shake off the nerves, stop overthinking, and jump in. Or, as my flatmate says, “Two shots of tequila and suddenly everyone’s an extrovert.” (Not always recommended before lectures, though.)

Most people want to talk, they’re just waiting for someone else to make the first move. So why not be that person? Start simple - a genuine “hello,” a smile and your name. Then, the key is to show real interest. Everyone likes feeling that they matter, even if only for five minutes. Ask about their interests, compliment something you notice, like their accent, backpack, or music taste. And if you’re feeling bold, try something fun: “If you could eat only one food forever, what would it be?”. A quirky conversation starter is always better than awkward silence.

You have to shake off the nerves, stop overthinking, and jump in.

Here’s my advice: pick a day and challenge yourself to talk to someone new. Say something silly, ask a question, or make a random observation. It doesn’t matter. What matters is stepping out of 'invisible mode'. Worst case? A brief awkward moment you’ll forget soon. Best case? A new friend.
