When I was thinking about what shows have outfits that are just absolutely fabulous, a couple came to mind: Sex and the City and Killing Eve.

From the very first episode of the first season, the costume department of Killing Eve have demonstrated their immense talent. Each character as their own distinct sense of style that really adds to and rounds out their character. For example, Kenny is extremely believable as young lad just out of uni working his first job. Carolyn’s sharp yet sophisticated dress sense makes Fiona Shaw really adds to her intimidating nature.

But it is the myriad of dresses, suits etc worn by Jodie Comer that stand out the most. From the large pink tule dress in series one, the red number in the Series 2 finale or even the yellow smock outfit in Series 3 when Eve and Villanelle say goodbye, her clothes are something that have become synonymous with the character. The outfits she wears when disguising herself to assassinate others are also amazing - the fact that she seamlessly blends in to her surroundings, unsuspecting to others, make the show all the more exciting.

My favourite outfit from the show though had to be Eve’s navy dress that Villanelle ends up stealing. It complements Sandra Oh so well and lets us see Eve as not just a security operative, but as a someone you could believe would be desired so much to point of obsession (as Villanelle is with her).

For me, the real stars of Sex and the City are the outfits. When I was younger (before I realised what the real subject matter of the show was), I remember being obsessed with clothes, especially the dresses. I mean, the wedding and bridesmaids dresses in the first film were to die for. The outfits really speak to and complete each character, which I think is quite important.

Samantha and Miranda are strong, high powered women at the tops of their fields and what they wear, such as smart, yet complimentary dresses and suits, reflect this. It makes us believe in them. Similarly, Charlotte’s soft, romantic, hopeful nature is seen in her slightly more reserved fashion sense, often sporting pink and black numbers.

And lastly, Carrie’s outfits are where her aloof, chaotic demeanour can be seen. Her wardrobe is a sea of bright colours, patterns, fabrics and designer items that might not always go together (case in point what she wears when she goes to the dry cleaners but finds it has been closed down). There isn’t much rhyme or reason to her outfits at time but everything she wears just seems to work.

As a final point, the shoes. The many. Many. Many pairs of shoes. They are such a focal point (along with clothes) of the show that it becomes the opening in he first movie - “20 something women come to New York City in search for the 2 L’s: Labels and Love”. This in itself really cements the wardrobe department as one of the greats.

These eclectic mixes of items make for shows that are not only interesting in their content, but also wonderful in their visual aspects too.
