Despite multiple fundraisers such as the #MyTynesideCinema campaign, and donations from Newcastle University's own Film Society, the cinema now faces job discussions with all 111 members of staff, warning that redundancies or changes in contract could be one of the few ways to ensure the company's future.
Although most staff have been on furlough pay since lockdown started, some are set to lose their jobs
Although most staff have been on furlough pay since lockdown started, some are set to lose their jobs - even if new government regulations and social distancing measures allow Tyneside to reopen.
During this period of temporary closure, the cinema would have normally made around £500,000, says Holli Keeble (chief executive). "Although there are many uncertainties which will influence the manner in which we can reopen, what we can be certain of is that the business operation of Tyneside Cinema in the future will be smaller than the one which closed its doors in March."
Tyneside said they are "taking decisive action now and being flexible in our approach"
Discussions are planned to take place throughout June and July, with a decision on the future being announced by trustees of the cinema soon after.
In an email to donors, Tyneside said they are "taking decisive action now and being flexible in our approach so that we can respond to opportunities as they arise over the coming weeks. These are difficult steps, but we must prioritise the protection of the long-term future of the charity."
Keeble went on to say that the team "want to make sure Tyneside Cinema is part of the solution to re-energise the city centre by welcoming audiences back to our beautiful heritage building - bringing people together to collectively experience the magic of film."
