The market visits a variety of different cities each month, with latest locations including St Albans and Bournemouth. I have visited the markets a few times - in Sheffield and last year in Newcastle. There’s always some great food to try, such as cheesecake, hot dogs, fish, and scotch eggs.
My mum and I bought some incredible cakes from a stall called Adventurous Cake Book at one of the Sheffield markets. We got a box of 4 for around £10, including raspberry ripple brownie, peanut butter brownie, rocky road, and a bueno & banana bun. At the Newcastle market, I got fried chicken and gravy. The texture and appearance of the chicken was really impressive!

One of the things I love the most about these markets (and markets in general) is that they provide an outlet for small businesses to show off their products. The Newcastle market invited lots of local sellers, such as Glazed donuts, Saving Nemo, Tyne Chease Ltd, and Magpye. Because the markets are usually held in areas with prominent footfall (e.g. Grainger Street), passersby are more likely to look around and buy something. This gives small businesses a boost and helps to reduce the stigma around vegan food – vegans can still eat delicious cakes, afterall!
Although I’m not vegan, I enjoy trying new food and most of the meals I make for myself are vegetarian; Linda McCartney has a special place in my heart. The markets are the perfect place to give vegan food a try. I promise it’s not scary - most of the time, you wouldn’t even know it’s vegan. According to their website, Vegan Market Co will next be in the Toon on Saturday 27 April. I’d highly recommend having a gander and picking up some tasty treats.
