A look at how Back To The Future II’s predictions of 2015, still aren’t true 9 years later.
I don’t remember the first time I ever watched any of the Back To The Future films, but it has and will always be my favourite film trilogy. As a child, I definitely believed we would have flying cars in 2015, because I believed Marty and Doc knew the truth. They were extremely optimistic of how much technology could advance!
Then, when I was 12 years old, Future Day happened! If you haven’t heard of this, on the 21st October 2015, the world celebrated as the day for the famous time travelling duo finally arrived. 9 years later, and as an “adult”, I still try and make sure to watch the trilogy to celebrate it.
Here’s 6 things they predicted of the future, and how wrong they were:
They were extremely optimistic of how much technology could advance!
Flying cars – one of the most iconic lines of the trilogy is “Roads? Where we’re going, we don’t need roads”. Yet here we are, in 2024, indeed needing the roads.
Weather predictions – in the film, Doc tells Marty exactly when the rain will stop. I think a lot of us would find it easier to plan outfits if we had that today.
Fashion – they thought we would have self-lacing boots and coats that could try when wet. Not to mention they could change size to fit Marty perfectly.
Hoverboards – Marty encountered ones that would actually hover, not just the ones that everyone wanted in high school with the wheels.
Holograms – I know we have them in 2024, but in BTTF 2, they’re used for everything – especially promotions and advertising. Marty gets scared by a shark to promote a new Jaws film.
Medical advancements – Doc had his aged organs replaced, and his appearance is rejuvenated. People pay thousands for plastic surgery, but you can’t walk into a hospital to get an organ replaced as easily as the film implies.
