Coming from the United States to the UK has very much been a cultural shock for me. From the food, the unfamiliar slang, and little everyday moments, I have learned so much in just one month of being here.

Even the simplest things like talking to my flat mates and which side of the sidewalk to walk on have become their own little adventures. As someone who has spent her whole life in America, getting used to life across the pound has been so much fun, and I still have so much to learn and discover.

One thing I’ve learned since being in Newcastle is how much British English differs from American English. Although we technically speak the same language, sometimes it doesn’t feel like it.

For instance; the other day I heard my flat mates talking about items in the kitchen and the words they used were entirely different from the ones I do. It has been really fun learning all the different sayings, and I know there is plenty more for me to learn!

Another thing I have learned is how much pubs are a part of the British culture. Before coming, I had never been to a pub since there isn’t one near me back home, so I was very excited to come to my first one.

Going to pubs with my new friends has been a fun part of Newcastle so far, and not something I can experience back home in the states.

I've also learned how different the classes are compared to my university back in America. I’ve never been in a big lecture before Newcastle, so walking into my first lecture and seeing 100 students shocked me a little.

I’ve always been in classes with under 20 people so I’m still getting used to it. It has been very interesting adjusting to the lecture differences in England and navigating my way around the campus.

The last thing I’ve learned is how unpredictable the weather can be. Somedays, I left the flat without an umbrella or rain jacket, and then it starts to pour while I’m walking to a lecture or to the City Centre. It’s taught me to be prepared since the weather can change so quickly.

Even though I’ve only been here a month, I’ve already learned so much about British culture. I know there is so much more for me to discover, and I’m excited to see what other differences I notice during my time in Newcastle.
