Trying to decide what to wear for the first week of uni can be challenging, we all know that by the second week of term, and definitely by October, we all regress to jeans and a jumper, but that doesn’t mean we have to start there. Here’s my advice when trying to decide what to wear for the first day.

It might rain. This one seems kind of obvious but you wouldn’t think rain would be too much of an issue in September, it is and can be a problem if you’re dressed for summer and don’t have time to nip home for a coat. I would also say to wear a good pair of shoes, in my experience, you end up all over the place on freshers week – meeting people on your course, trying stuff with the freshers' activities, going out with new people – and you don’t always have time to change, so a good pair of shoes is a must-have.

Additionally, if you live far away make sure you have everything with you; this is good advice for the year but especially for freshers, you may not have time to nip home again so make sure you grab what you will need for the day, a good bag is worth it. You’ll probably end up picking up a lot of flyers and some free stuff so make sure you don’t end up dropping it all over the place.

All that being said, it doesn’t mean that you can’t stay true to your aesthetic or try something new

All this to say, you can look amazing and show a new side of yourself now that you live away from home (maybe for the first time), and have your own money, but you still need to be a little practical. Check your timetable for freshers. In music, for instance, we have a Cabaret and Ceilidh in freshers week which is wonderful but you need to be prepared for it. If you are in Marine Biology, for example, and you know there’s a beach trip, just be cautious that it might rain. All that being said, it doesn’t mean that you can’t stay true to your aesthetic or try something new, just don’t ruin all your clean clothes in the first week so you can’t wear them again.
