Working is no fun, it's a necessity most people have to do to survive. So, why do so many people want to do it vicariously through a screen?
Whether it's PowerWash Simulator, Farming Simulator, the numerous selection of truck driving simulators, most games on Roblox nowadays, or even the Papa's Games series - It seems that people need to work at something mundane, even if it's fictional, and they don't get paid. In this article I will offer a few theories to answer this question...
- Productivity is good for the mind. We as a species are surprisingly simple. Working away at something and seeing the fruits of our work, no matter how digital, gives a little something to our brains and we can get hooked. To want to feel productive, useful, accomplished, is a very normal human trait.
- All the fun, none of the pain. When I say "fun", I am referring to the productive and therapeutic nature of these games, but the point still stands. Job simulator games, while mundane, still need to keep it entertaining and relaxed. This means many negative aspects and consequences that happen in real-life jobs are toned down or cut entirely. Imagine being laid off in Papa's Pizzeria because of a budget cut?
- Time to unwind. Hinging on the previous point, the simplistic, grounded touch these games have can be a source of relaxation for many after a long day. Do this simple task. Look at your results. Rinse and repeat. These games are easy to turn your brain off to and enjoy the game for what it is. Sometimes a chill, predictable and boring game is what someone needs at the moment instead of a thrilling, epic adventure.
In an age where many struggle to find fulfilling work or work at all, doing something mundane yet therapeutic and seeing clear results, even if it's virtual, helps us feel a sense of achievement, progression, and utility, a sense that many claim they sorely lack today due to the aforementioned struggle with real-world work. With this in mind, it is easy to see the appeal of these games, even if you don't experience that itch yourself.
