Kelce’s new three-year deal has generated significant discussion and criticism in the sports community. Signed on March 23, 2026, many fans and critics have already begun to discuss the price of Kelce’s deal given his age of 36 years old. The average NFL player retires before the age of 30, with a reported average retirement age of approximately 27.6 years old. But whilst the agreement could be seen as a critical financial mistake for the team, it’s easy to see why Kelce’s recent mainstream fame could tempt the Chiefs into extending his contract. Whilst many doubt Kelce’s playing ability nearing 40, he remains the focal point of the offense on the Chiefs, and has an uber-famous fiance in tow. For a sports company obsessed with recognition, the decision to keep Kelce is a no-brainer.
Taylor Swift’s first surprise appearance at an Arrowhead Stadium game in September 2023 was the first indicator that the Chiefs could benefit from her well-known persona. The Chiefs’ posts on Twitter saw an increase in engagement of more than 85 percent compared to similar posts without her present. Teen girl viewership also spiked by around 53 percent in notable televised games she attended, bringing in a different audience of sports viewers that the NFL are notoriously not known for catering to. After she was spotted at the Chiefs game, Travis Kelce’s jerseys saw a nearly 400 percent spike in sales, making his jersey one of the top five sellers in the NFL at the time. Clark Hunt, the team owner, also reported a 30 percent growth in the Chiefs’ fan base after Swift began attending games, and marketing data shows that women now make up an estimated 57 percent of the Chiefs’ fan base - a figure well above league averages. By attending a few games, Taylor Swift has changed the trajectory of the Chiefs into a gender-inclusive, welcoming and extremely popular team.
But Taylor’s depiction of Travis Kelce within her songs is arguably what is most effective for the Chiefs. Kelce’s romance with Swift has allowed his marketing team to show him as a kind, caring individual who brings friendship bracelets to concerts. In the past, Kelce has previously made sexist and homophobic tweets, and has been involved in ‘bullying’ his coach Andy Reid, which he has since apologised for. Before Taylor Swift, Kelce’s reputation for the Chiefs was like any other player: sports-focused and hyper-masculine. But as he began to date Taylor Swift, his female viewership skyrocketed, allowing him to market himself as a more family-friendly, publicly-consumable figure that benefits both himself and his team. Swift adds to this, celebrating him in her songs and referencing his “team” and the “Chiefs” during the Eras tour, alongside publicising his role in rescuing her from past heartbreak. In mentioning not-so-subtle hints about Travis in her songs, Taylor has also alleviated her career with a whole new sports audience. Whether deliberate or not, both Travis and Taylor are profiting off each other.
Travis Kelce has a big year coming up, with another season to prepare for and an alleged wedding taking place in June, 2026. His new contract likely isn’t the last we’ll see of him this year, by a long shot, and the Chiefs know that. Not only is Kelce a strong player for their team but he is the face people see when they think of the NFL. To get rid of his reputation, particularly whilst he is still so relevant culturally, would be irreparably damaging to the Chief’s brand. Thanks to Taylor Swift, Travis Kelce is soaring to new heights. $57.7 million is never too much to pay for the upcoming years of promotion he’s about to give them. With a wedding around the corner, maybe there’ll be a few more mentions of the Chiefs in Taylor’s next album.
