Academic conferences are a great way for your voice to be heard. Showcasing your research is not only a valuable piece of experience to list on your CV, but a chance to make your first real mark in your academic career. With that in mind, here’s a list of 5 accessible conferences in 2023.

Research Scholarships and Expeditions – Summer

Beginning with the big guns, we have the Research Scholarships and Expeditions programme. Spend the Summer abroad on a research gathering expedition, cost-funded by the university. Perfect for ambitious students who wish to conduct their research firsthand, and across the globe. Previous trips have included the exotic destinations of Brazil, Iceland, Kenya, Papua New Guinea, Tibet and the Maldives. At the end of the trip, you will be invited to display your research at a conference, giving you a platform to announce your findings. All disciplines are encouraged to submit research proposals before the deadline of March 3rd. Applications should be submitted to vacation-scholarships@ncl.ac.uk.

Newcastle Conference of Undergraduate Research (NCUR) - 27th March

Looking for something smaller scale? NCUR has your back. Affiliated with the British conference of Undergraduate Research, it provides the best opportunity for you to “test your metal” in a more comfortable setting. Conveniently located on campus in the Henry Daysh, NCUR provides a highly accessible option for students. To get involved, get in touch with thencur@newcastle.ac.uk.

Posters in Parliament - TBD

An event for campus politicos, Posters in Parliament is your opportunity to visit the corridors of power. Present your ideas for governmental reform and have the chance to engage with those who can make it happen. Previous entries have included commentary on socio-economic topics such as class, health, and race. Although there is no official date for the conference to run this year, this is subject to expressed interest. E-mail thebcur@newcastle.ac.uk to contact the team.

I Exist Too Forum - 25th May

Shining a light on LGBTIQ+ issues, the I Exist Too Forum promotes important discussions on diversity. With two panels focused on LGBTIQ+ visibility, access, inclusion and growth in the maritime industry, the conference has a range of options to raise problems and solutions. Contact iexisttoo2023@newcastle.ac.uk for more information.

Philosophy Across Disciplines (PAD) - TBD

Designed for those students on separate courses, yet who still hold an interest in philosophy. PAD encourages collaboration between disciplines through the common ground of philosophy. Many students may be unaware of the importance of philosophy, not only in their subject, but also in their everyday life. This conference gives you the opportunity to explore these ideas from a campus location. E-mail i.giannikos1@newcastle.ac.uk to express your interest.
